Carp Stencil
Paper mulberry, persimmon tannin
Hand carved

This design, excluding the border, is 9″ x 13.5″. The artist overcame the limitations of the small workspace and added tension and movement by placing the carp in opposite directions and splitting one of the two in half. When the stencil is repeated, the split carp will be made whole, half a length before or after the other in the design. Four discreet guide holes, two at the top and two at the base of the design, will help position the stencil in exactly the right place to achieve that. Persimmon tannin, which browns the paper, also strengthens and waterproofs it against the wet dye medium so it can be used multiple times.
