This was the top layer of a wedding ensemble, and would have been worn open, without a sash. The materials, motifs and techniques are traditionally associated with the military aristocracy. In addition to the auspicious pine, plum and bamboo, and the crane and tortoise in embroidery and couched gold thread, woven into the figured satin are shell game boxes and clam shells (see below). Since each clam shell has only one perfect match, they are apt symbols for the married couple.
