Kabuki banner (12.3′ x 2.9′)
Stencil printing (?); dyes, pigments

This banner, advertising ‘year-end kabuki with big name attractions’, was not made to last. The scratchy cotton is paper-thin, and the once-red dye was not color-fast and has washed away to pink. The white dots were probably once hand-painted with blossoms. Nevertheless, it has its own homely charm, with images of liquor bottles, ‘sold out’ signs, paper lanterns, and Edo period gold coins.
