Figured silk, cotton (lining)
Stenciled yuzen (?); (additional techniques?)

In the early decades of the 20th century there was a trend toward bright colors and popping, vibrant designs.

In this kimono, geometric red, yellow and blue asanoha (hemp leaves) make up the background, while dimensional cartoon camellias stand out in the foreground.

Designs of hollyhocks (aoi), once closely associated with the Tokugawa shogunate, are woven into the silk itself, so the kimono has very old elements in a very modern presentation.  Bright designs like this probably influenced the rise of the Hawaiian shirt.
