Kimono or haori fragment
Silk (and rayon?)
Stenciled warps, hand tie dyed wefts

This fragment presents the usually staid motif of the scholarly scrolls as vibrant and dynamic. The scholar’s scrolls are one of the seven treasures, and infrequently appear by themselves.

The unrealistically bright colors of the very large scrolls on a green ground, and on a diagonal so they appear to veer on and off the panel, never seen in their entirety, help to frame this old theme in a way that is fresh and new to the eye.

In the close up below, a small hint of the sparingly used supplementary metallic threads can be seen.
