Hitoe

Shibori

Plovers and waves have appeared on Daily Japanese Textile before, since the theme is much loved. In this hitoe, the design is highly simplified, but no Japanese would have trouble distinguishing the lines as cresting waves and the abstract leaf-like outlines as plovers. The color and design are suitable for a young unmarried girl.

In the close-up below, a small knot can be seen at the plover’s tail. A knot pulled too tight might actually rip the delicate material, so some knots were judged better to leave intact.
