Boys’ Day Banner
Cotton
Tsutsugaki rice paste resist, hand painted details, stenciling
This Boys’ Day Banner is shown in three sequential parts, with some overlapping.
Military themes were popular in Boys’ Day Banners, reminding boys that they should aspire to masculine ideals.
In addition to his armor, the warrior below is wearing a very bright jinbaori (battle jacket). The uniforms of modern military leaders blend in to a large degree with the uniforms of the lower ranks, but Japanese military commanders of the 16th century needed to be distinguishable to their troops from a distance. As a result, some jinbaori were made in eccentric shapes and exotic materials for higher visibility (and higher status).
Hand painted facial features do not always stand up to the test of time. The features of the two commanders have faded, but the grim and determined face of the retainer is still very clear.
any idea when this was made? it must be very beautiful when it is out on display.
